It's a small world after all. When everyone is looking into tiny houses and downsizing planting a mini garden fits in perfect. Minimalist are becoming popular with people looking to donate many items because we have all collected way to much stuff. So having a ton of large planters and plants that take up a lot of room is not so appealing.

Well, when it comes to your garden you can easily downsize. Not only using small planters with tiny plants but making them even more creative by turning them into fairy gardens. If you are new to this concept it means decorating the pots with tiny items that create a little home and play area for the fairies that live in your garden. LOL

When creating a tiny fairy garden it's important to choose drought tolerant succulents. You may also want to use child and pet friendly plants since the little ones will be really interested in looking closer to a potted fairy garden. Remember to use good quality potting mix and make sure there are drain holes in the bottom of any container you use.

Basically a fairy garden is a mini pot complete with tiny plants and miniscule accessories that give the impression that tiny creates really live there. Try using creative containers, dollhouse furniture, tiny items that create the look and feel you want to project. Add tiny pebbles to create walk ways and little garden tools, furniture and toys.

Create something small and playful and have fun here. This is not the time to be formal or boring.

Tips For Creating A Fairy Pot |
|
|
|
 |
Creating a mini fairy garden in a fun container has become very popular. They are basically a new take on the old terrarium ideas of years gone by. What makes these extra special is all the miniature goodies that you get to place in the pot with the plants. Little things like benches, water features, houses, walking paths, stone, mini birdhouses, all things that are miniature and fairy like.
First you want to find the container. We have seen everything from a terracotta clay flower pot to picnic baskets, wheelbarrows, tea cups, boxes, suitcases, purses, colorful glazed garden bowls, metal cans, and pretty much anything you can think of. Next add soil and please use potting mix not dirt. Select your plants. Herbs, ferns, bonsai trees & bushes. Make sure it's miniature and you can keep it small.
Then add your fun and playful accessories. Seating areas, paths, fences, furniture, and tables. Use natural materials like reeds, rocks, raffia, twigs, bark. A small mirror makes a great reflecting pool. You get the idea.

Fairy Gardens should have a taste of whimsy.. This isn't the time for being realistic. Use seashells, marbles, buttons and bottle caps for stepping stones. Finish off with a few touches and that should do it.
Keep it clean, watered and replace items as necessary. These are perfect for a patio table or any garden area where you want a touch of playfulness.

Saw this in Sunset Magazine and had to share. Turn a Mint tin into a tiny succulent garden.
Here's how:
A tiny succulent garden that is a doll house size. Poke a drain hole in a mint tin with a nail, then plant bite-sizes succulents. Crassula, Echeveria & Sedum in a small amount of soil. They don't need much. Give as a hostess gift or place at your desk for a bit of green.
How about placing one at each place setting for a formal dinner where each guest can take one home. Wedding Favor anyone? Succulents are so popular now, everyone is trying to grow them in potted gardens, fairy gardens, around the house, vertical walls and so much more.
Give this little idea a go, we know you will love it! |
