Make small outdoor area look bigger |

Not everyone has the space to make a large outdoor area but here are a few tips to help make small areas look a bit larger using planters, colors, & flowers.

Create areas that can be multi-functional. A table to drink a cup of coffee, play board games, service food or buffet for entertaining. Everyone likes to be outdoors when the weather permits enjoying the potted flowers, the sweet clean air, and bright sunlight.

Turn a blank patio wall into a vertical garden. That will visually expand the area and make it look larger and more lush. Plant lots of hanging baskets, trailing evergreens like ivy & more. If there is a ledge at the top of a wall place window box or rectangle planters and fill with climbing plants and flowing flower vines.

When deciding what colors to plant, remember if you place yellow & red flowers at the front of the garden and blues at the back it helps create a feel that the garden area is larger than it really is. Follow the same pattern with colored garden containers. The cool colors make that area seem further away and the overall garden deeper.

Tiny or small scale furniture makes the overall area appear larger. When you have a huge sectional couch and huge rockers on a small garden patio they look like they are swallowing them up. If you stick with a more limited size of furnishings and planters it looks more balanced and proportioned.

Lastly, try using mirrors on a garden or patio wall. How about mirrored or reflective outdoor planters. The light will reflect off of them and they will create a much larger looking area with sunlight & plants reflecting in the mirrors.
