Conifers, commonly referred to as evergreens, or cone bearing trees, grow well in decorative containers since they tolerate root restriction and need much less food from the soil than larger leaved plants. They can vary in shape and are great for shaping into topiary or sphere’s. Since they are mostly slow growing, they lend themselves to containers. If you do purchase it fast growing one, make sure it is keep neatly trimmed so that it doesn’t develop spindly, leggy branches. |

| Conifers need minimal maintenance. Make sure they are planted in a potting soil meant for this type of use. Every spring we recommend cleaning up the planter, fertilizing and mixing it into the top soil. This is a good time to prune them but most don’t require it. You can clean out any stems that may have been broken or are taking on an odd shape. |

Chamaecyparis – Green to gray green and yellow.

Considering the potting of such plant materials, we do have a few tips to keep in mind.
10” to 24” in width are common sizes for these types. The final decision will be based on the size of conifer you are starting with and how many other items you will be placing in the pot along with them. Make sure they are deep enough to hold a healthy root system. These pots are great for planting bulbs in so that each spring they will bloom and add tremendous color to the evergreen plant. We also recommend a trailing ivy draping down the sides for added charm. |

If this is the type of pot that you want to sit out all year, then you have to go with a high fired clay and glazed product, a concrete or fiberglass, a poly resin or stone planter. They are meant to with stand the colder temperatures and hold up from season to season. As you can see from the photos, this type of potted plant is great for creating a divider or screen area. Line the pots up and let the conifers grow up and slightly out to create a barrier. Super easy to portable when you plant them in garden planters instead of the ground. |
